It was a strange thing to find in the cavern, but Nova wasn't going to let it scare her away. She wasn't superstitious after all, and there didn't seem to be any danger, so instead of backing out, she approached the odd formation in the darkness. It was the remains of a tree stump, broken or chopped at a few feet high. There was a dark mass settled at the top; from the distance, it looked like a head with long, wild hair, but when her eyes focused in on the details, she could tell that it was hand-made. The head looked like a rock, studded with shiny gem stones that must have been meant to resemble sharp teeth and bright eyes. The hair was a plant of some kind; she didn't know what kind, but Rip probably would have.. had he been there, instead of a day's distance from the island. Topping it off was something that made her jaw drop: the hat she used to wear, for nearly her entire life, until it was lost in a rather nasty fight a few years ago. Her mother gave her that hat when she was a kid, and the ache of losing it hurt longer than the damage from the fight did.

Somehow, someone found that old hat and brought it here, into the caverns beneath the volcano, and placed it upon this creepy tree thing. But that fight ended with no one left to bother her. She didn't have any visitors to deliver flowers and "Get Well Soon" cards; Nowhere Isle remained uninhabited, aside from herself and the wildlife. Who on Earth could have.. would have..

Nova could tell that the hat was falling apart and rotting, and she had no interest in wearing it, but she had to check this place out to try to understand the situation. Though climbing was her strong suit, this place was trickier than it appeared. The water didn't seem deep enough to drown, and the current was nothing to worry about, but it was dark, and slippery, and her rust-prone boots were heavy enough to discourage swimming. So, she went carefully, slowly, testing every step, hopping across the rocks towards the remains of the tree. Maybe it was just a stump of its former self, but it was taller than it looked. Taller than her. Who ever assembled the bizarre head on top must have had some height to them.. or, at least had the forethought to bring a ladder. She would be able to climb it easily enough, but the thought of hauling a boulder to the top was daunting. Again, who would do that? What was the point?

She asessed the climb and planned the approach. There was some rot and a lot of moss on the tree, but it had a few good holds and dry spots. She knelt and set her torch against a rock, far enough from the tree that there was no fire risk, and angled to make the best use of the light. As she was rising back to her feet, she noticed another odd thing. The base of the tree was split and hollow. Inside, covered thickly by moss, was a skull, with a mouth full of wickedly sharp teeth. This sight would petrify most explorers, but to Nova, it wasn't fear that she felt. Her heart sank. Tears flooded her eyes until she couldn't see straight. She recognized that smiling skull. For so long Nova felt alone and friendless -- how did she manage to forget about her oldest friend?

"Alice.. what happened to you.."
